PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control method for an internal combustion engine that is capable of assisting a braking force during deceleration of a vehicle by effectively generating a pump loss. SOLUTION: In a non-throttle engine, no vacuum is produced in a combustion chamber and there produced almost no pump loss. This presents a problem of poor engine braking. This invention uses a variable valve train that can arbitrarily control open/close timing and a lift amount of an intake valve and an exhaust valve, thereby effectively producing a pump loss. Specifically, when a brake pedal effort detecting means detects a brake pedal effort and it is detected that an anti-lock brake system is activated, either the intake valve or the exhaust valve is closed. Then, the other valve that is not closed is opened once in a period of time, during which a piston moves from a top dead center to a bottom dead center; namely, during one revolution of the engine. The lift amount of the valve that is opened is controlled to a predetermined value, thereby achieving the foregoing purpose. |
