Pig iron refining - to steel, adding hydrogen - rich gas to oxygen to reduce smoke formation

Gas with high H2 concn. is added to O2 in a modification of process for converting pig iron to steel as in the parent patent, in which at least one O2 jet, surrounded by a haze of gas inert to melt and/or gas supply material, is introduced to melt in converter below bath surface, in order to suppress or minimse brown smoke formation. Pref. O2 is admixed with up to 30 vol.E steam or pref. up to 2 vol.% propane, or pref. a solid contg. water of hdyration, e.g. partly hydrated powdered lime, or pref. water.
