A radial ply pneumatic tyre is provided with a supplementary tyre cord ply structure 30 comprising a single ply of parallel textile cords inclined at between 0 and 60 degrees to the mid-circumferential plane of the tyre, this supplementary ply being folded back on itself, 31, 32 and extending into at least one sidewall beyond the axial limit of the breaker structure 29. One or both of the turned-up edges 31a, 32a may extend into the crown region of the under-tread (Fig. 3, not shown), and there may be two supplementary plies (Figs. 4, 5, not shown), one corresponding to each sidewall. In a tyre with a separate carcass ply corresponding to each sidewall wherein these two carcass plies have their respective edges axially separate in the crown region (Fig. 9, not shown), a supplementary ply structure is provided radially inward of these carcass plies. In. all these embodiments either or both carcass ply bead turnup portions may extend some way into a lower sidewall region and be folded back upon itself. The portion of the sidewall that is not reinforced by either the supplementary ply or the foldedback portion of the carcass ply may be reduced in thickness. |
