PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for bionically producing a hydroxylated heterocyclic compound and a hydroxylated aromatic carboxylic acid, and to obtain a modified enzyme which can be used for the method. SOLUTION: The method for producing the hydroxylated heterocyclic compound or the hydroxylated aromatic carboxylic acid comprises reacting an aromatic ring dioxygenase with a heterocyclic compound or an aromatic carboxylic acid to hydroxylate the heterocyclic compound or the aromatic carboxylic acid. The enzyme is preferably an aromatic ring dioxygenase comprising the tetramer of a β-subunit, ferredoxin, ferredoxin reductase and an α- subunit comprising an amino acid sequence modified according to the α-subunit of a biphenyldioxygenase originated from Burkhold eria cepacia LB400 strain.
