PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a filter medium whose sterilizing effect is reliable and an inexpensive and reliable water treatment method in relation to a filter medium having such an antibacterial function as to remove injurious microorganisms. SOLUTION: In the water treatment method, the filter medium of sand having an antibacterial function is composed of sand coated with an organic quaternary ammonium salt and an inorganic metal compound and contaminated water is introduced from the inlet or outlet of a filter and filtered.
