A converging-diverging nozzle for use in a meter prover is disclosed. The nozzle has a modified throat section. Specifically, the throat is modifi ed so as to provide a step-wise discontinuity between the converging and diverging sections of the nozzle. This discontinuity can be described as a "step", or a "throat ring", in which the radius of the step (or throat ring) is between about 105% and 110% of the minimum radius of the converging section of the nozzle.
