PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for retaining freshness of plants, fruit or food, capable of actively removing a deterioration-accelerating gas generated from themselves, an offensive odor, and a pollutant floating in a container receiving them, so that the plants, fruit or food retain the freshness and are hygienically kept, by adapting a system for controlling the temperature in the container. SOLUTION: This method for retaining the freshness of the plants, fruit or food comprises accelerating adsorption of ethylene gas and decomposition of the gas by using a photocatalyst in an atmosphere of a high relative humidity. The plants, fruit or food in the container can be retained in a hibernating state by controlling the humidity and the temperature.
