PURPOSE: A printer is provided to open a cover while avoiding interference with parts inside a printer without hindering smooth opening and closing of the cover, increasing printer size, or requiring a large space around the printer. CONSTITUTION: A printer retracts a platen(17) and transportation rollers when a cover is opened. The printer has a frame having a paper storage unit(13) for storing a paper roll(P1), a cover(28) for opening and closing an opening to the storage unit, a print head(16) for printing on the roll paper from the paper roll, a platen freely rotatably coupled to the cover for guiding the back of the roll paper at an adjacent position opposite the print head, and an abutment for engaging a platen engagement lever and rotating the platen in a contrary direction in conjunction with opening and closing the cover. When the cover opens, the abutment rotates the free end side of the platen away from the adjacent position opposite the print head, and when the cover closes the abutment rotates the free end of the platen toward the adjacent opposite position.
