A method of compressing a gas e.g. a mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen for synthesis of ammonia comprises compressing the gas in a first stage 2, cooling the gas by heat exchange with water in a heat exchanger 4 and by heat exchange with and consequent vaporisation of a volatile liquid refrigerant in a heat exchanger 10, and finally compressing the gas in a second stage 17. The liquid refrigerant may be ammonia, a fluorinated hydrocarbon, propane or butane and is recirculated through a conventional refrigeration cycle comprising a compressor 19, a water cooled heat exchanger 21 and a pressure reducing valve 26. A condensate separator 14 may be inserted between the stages and additional stages having additional heat exchangers may also be provided. |
