<p>The adhesive properties of polyethylene and cellulose are improved by the addition thereto of a carboxylic acid or anhydride modified polyethylene wax having a density of at least 0.88 and a molecular weight of from 1000 to 5000. Specified modified polyethylenes are made by heating polyethylene waxes, which have been made by pyrolysis of high density polyethylene, with maleic acid, maleic anhydride and thioglycolic acid. The Specification describes also the preparation of coating compositions based on the above modified polyethylene waxes, the modified wax being either dissolved in a solvent, e.g. toluene or mineral spirits, or suspended in water containing morpholine and oleic acid.ALSO:The adhesive properties of polyethylene films and cellulosic sheet materials, e.g. paper, cardboard and corrugated board, are improved by coating them with a carboxylic acid or anhydride modified polyethylene wax having a density of at least 0.88 and a molecular weight of from 1000 to 5000. Specified modified polyethylenes are made by reacting polyethylene wax with maleic acid, maleic anhydride and thioglycolic acid. The modified polyethylene may be applied to the substrate from solution in an organic solvent, e.g. toluene or mineral spirits, or from an aqueous emulsion. The resulting coated substrates show good adhesion to surfaces of metal, polyethylene and other synthetic resins.ALSO:Paper, including cardboard and corrugated board, is provided with adhesiveness for polyethylene films by incorporating in the paper, either during or after its manufacture, a carboxylic acid or anhydride modified polyethylene wax having a density of at least 0.88 and a molecular weight of from 1000 to 5000. The examples describe the use of an aqueous emulsion of a maleic anhydride modified polyethylene wax: (73) to impregnate paper, (74) as an additive to cellulose paper stock in water, which is then hand sheeted, and (75) to impregnate the paper made in (74).</p> |
