A metallic material which comprises magnesium, e.g a magnesium alloy containing at least 85% by weight magnesium, has a surface layer, e.g. having a thickness of from 3pm to 5pm, in which zinc has been diffused into the material to provide atomic substitution of the magnesium. Beneficially, the material may have a corrosion potential having a magnitude of less than - 0.6 volts, preferably less tan - 0.5 volts. Such a material may be produced by heating a magnesium alloy material together with zinc optionally in the presence of an inert filler material. The zinc may be in elemental form or in the form of a compound or alloy. The treated magnesium material resulting shows a superior combination of properties and may be employed to make a variety of products for use for example as structural components in the electronics and automotive industries.
|
