A communication network (10) providing a means for the user to update existing certificate while retaining their associated public key pair. The system includes three network stations, representing any network entity (40), the user (30) and a sponsor (50). The user has a password, an identifier, a symmetric key and a public key pair in which the private key constitutes a split key. The first station, which might constitutes a merchant, sends out arequest for authentication of the user. The third station generates a certificates as modified by the user to the first station upon receipt of the request.
