Hinge fitting for a seat and back rest, especially of a motor vehicle

[Also in Division E2] In a hinge fitting for adjusting the inclination of the back of a motor vehicle seat a device is incorporated which ensures the seat-back returning to a previously adjusted position after tilting it forward to allow access to the rear seats in a twodoor vehicle. The hinge comprises a fixed part 1 and a movable part 2 pivoting about a pin 4 and biased towards each other by a spiral spring 5. The movable part 2 is locked to part 1 by a pinion 7 locating with a rack 6, the pinion 7 only being rotatable when a lever 16 is rotated so that a tooth 17 separates two locking bevels 10, 12 (Fig. 2, not shown) arranged on a shaft 8. Pivoting the seat-back right forward automatically locks the lever 16 in the releasing position and the lever is only freed to return to the locking position when a detent 28 moves a pawl 21 out of engagement with a lug 20 when the seat-back is in the previously adjusted position. To "memorize" the amount of movement of the seat-back a disc 27 carrying the detent 28 is driven by a gear train 271, 29, 31 which engages with the locking bevel 12 when lever 16 is in the releasing position. The detent 28 is biased by a spring 33 to a neutral position adjacent the pawl 21. The spring 33 may be replaced by two springs acting in opposite directions to define the neutral position (Figs. 4 and 6, not shown) and the disc 27 may be replaced by a rack (Fig. 6, not shown). In a modification (Fig. 7, not shown) the lever 16 pivots and has a rack section attached which engages the rack 6. Pivoting the lever to unlock the hinge disengages the rack 6 and pushes a gear into mesh with a disc 27.
