In gas shielded arc welding in which a consumable electrode 6 (the Figure not shown) is connected to the negative pole of a D.C. source 5 via a reactor 21, the gas shield consists of an inner layer 18 of inert gas and oxygen and an outer layer 19 of carbon dioxide. The inner layer 18 includes 1-20% oxygen and issues through an inner nozzle 13 projecting beyond an outer gas nozzle 15. The inner layer may be argon and 5% oxygen. A steel electrode for welding semi-killed steel plates contains at least 0À3% Si and 0À5% Mn. The electrode may contain 0À08% C, 0À8% Si, 1À5% Mn, 0À03% max. P and 0À03% max S. Once the arc has been struck the pressure of the inner layer 18 is reduced. |
