The invention comprises a steroid of the general formula <FORM:1038524/C2/1> wherein R represents hydrogen, R1 represents hydrogen or b -hydroxy, or together R and R1 are keto, X and X1 represent hydrogen, halogen, hydroxy, lower alkoxy (1-8 carbons) or lower alkyl (1-8 carbons), at least one X being hydrogen; Y represents hydrogen, methyl, chloro or fluoro; Z represents hydrogen, halogen, hydroxy or acyloxy; and R11 represents a cation, and an improvement in the process for the enzymatic 1-dehydrogenation of a steroid of the 16a ,17a -dihydroxy-3-keto-D 4-pregnene series characterized by employing as the steroid substrate a water-soluble 16,17-cycloborate ester, or the salt thereof of the 16a ,17a -dihydroxy -3-keto-4-pregnene series.
