A method of mixing unvulcanized rubber comprises continuously feeding the rubber to the input side of a nip of a pair of mill rolls having parallel axes, driving the mill rolls to produce a strip of rubber, leading said strip round a rotatable roller disposed with its axis inclined relative to the axes of the mill rolls and back to the input side of said nip, continuously rotating the rolls and roller so that a continuous belt of rubber is formed around one of the rolls and the roller, the material in the belt progressing axially along the mill rolls from an input station to a withdrawal station, and continuously withdrawing the rubber. The term rubber includes plastic material. In a modification, the amount of material in the bank formed is kept constant by sensing means which controls an input extruder.ALSO:An apparatus for mixing rubber comprises a pair of mill rolls having parallel axes of rotation and forming a nip between the rolls, the rolls being rotatably supported on a frame and being drivable to form material fed to the input side of the nip into a sheet or strip leaving the output side of the nip, and a rotatable roller positioned to receive said sheet or strip from the output side of the nip and to return said sheet or strip to the input side of the nip, the rotatable roller having an axis of rotation inclined with respect to the axes of rotation of the mill rolls. The apparatus may have a sensing device to provide a constant and continuous input of material and a knife and guide plates to provide a continuous and constant take-off. |
