A telephone apparatus having video telephone function capable of transmitting not only an image picked up by a camera but also an image stored in a storage block. The operation required for this is simple like the conventional telephone apparatus. In response to calling, a video telephone off−hook key (5) or an audio off−hook key (6) is operated (step 701 or 702), so that a video telephone arriaval processing is performed (step 703) and a call connection processing is performed (step 704). When the video telephone off−hook key (5) is operated, a camera unit (8) enters an operation state (step 705), and a video signal from the camera unit (8) is encoded (step 706) and input to a central processing unit (21). When the audio off−hook key (6) is operated, a video signal stored in the storage block (20) is read out (step 707), encoded (step 708), and input to the central processing unit (21).
