An apparatus and method for re-profiling and reusing profile insert blades (22) on a rotating cutting tool (10, 60) without losing the radial, axial or profile dimensions. The tool (10, 60) has one or more insert pockets (18) for receiving profiled inserts (22). Each insert (22) has a top edge (52), a cutting profile (48), a reference edge (54), a back edge (50), and is held in place by clamps (26). The back edge (50) is aligned against a ramp edge (32) of the cutting tool body (10, 60), and the reference edge (54) is aligned with a bottom face (56) of the tool body (10, 60). A dull insert (22) is reprofiled along the cutting profile (48), and a material is removed from the bottom edge (54) of the insert (22), which is reinserted into the tool body (10, 60) and advanced along the ramp (32) until the new reference edge (54) of the insert (22) is aligned with the reference face (56). |
