This invention relates to aaparatus and methods for variable optical output control and systems containing such controls. The apparatus comprises an optical fiber (10) having two identical Bragg gratings (G1, G2). The fiber (1) is attached to a housing (12) at three points (F1, F2, F3) and a central portion (14) of the housing (12) is movable. The wavelength of the optical signal propagating in the fiber is varied by applying a force to the fiber (10). The apparatus can be also used with a fiber laser.
