The impact protection includes a bumper and a rubber-elastic impact strip (4) comprising an air-inflatable tube (5) and a fascia panel (12). The air tube (5) is connected through a pressure line (9) to a pressure reservoir (8) to form an air cushion (6) and the air pressure in the tube can be controlled through a valve (7). The valve is connected through an electronic control lead (11) to a detection sensor unit (10) for detecting the size of the anticipated shock directly before collision of the vehicle with for example a pedestrian.
