A method of reporting input powers for each of a plurality of optical channels 16 input into a dispersive optical component 11 such as a dense wavelength division multiplexer comprises generating an output power matrix with the measured powers of each output channel 21 of the component as its elements, recalling from storage means an inversion matrix which has been derived from a first matrix representing a normalised spectral energy distribution for each input optical channel 16 at a particular carrier frequency and a second matrix representing the frequency response for each physical detector 26 of a particular optical channel, and performing matrix multiplication of the output power matrix with the inversion matrix to generate an input power matrix representing the input power of the optical channels. |
