A dsRNA-dependent protein kinase (PKR) DNA having the sequence fully defined in the specification and containing one of the polymorphisms given in the specification, or its complement, is new. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a portion of the claimed DNA comprising at least 15 nucleotides and at least one of the polymorphisms; (2) a DNA vector or construct containing the claimed DNA; (3) a host cell or it's descendent transformed with the above vector; (4) a mammal containing the above host cell; (5) determining therapeutic accessibility of an IFN, particularly IFN alpha medication in a patient with hepatitis C virus infection by determining the genetic constitution of the PKR gene from a patient's blood, saliva, cell or hair sample and correlating it with data in a databank; (6) a chip for performing the above method; (7) an amino acid of a PKR sequence having the polymorphisms described in the specification; (8) a PKR-RNA sequence which is an analogue of the claimed DNA sequence; (9) producing the claimed DNA, RNA or amino acid; (10) identifying an active substance, particularly an oligonucleotide, comprising screening test substances in a test system containing the claimed DNA and detecting a physical, chemical or biological signal.
