The invention relates to a spinning device in which several slivers are fed to an opening cylinder and separated into individual fibers and said individual fibers are deposited in the form of an expanded fiber veil on a moving, air-permeable collecting surface. During transportation to the collecting surface, the fiber veil is compacted crosswise relative to its direction of movement into a fiber assembly. The sliver that now resembles more a slub is transported through a nip line and twisted into a thread by means of a swirl nozzle. Compacting is carried out only after the last opening cylinder in the direction of movement of the collecting surface. The fiber veil can be maintained narrower than in the past due to the succession of several opening cylinders.
