A combustible compound for making kindlers comprises a hydrocarbon such as kerosene, lamp oil or paraffin wax, ethanol, diester, agricultural fuels or biomass, and other natural components such as coal dust, peat, wood paper or cardboard residue, water and binding agents with a water content of 1-10 vol.%, preferably 0.5-7.5 vol.%, and made into blocks, granules or sticks. The ingredients are made into an emulsion in a chamber (2) with a dosing pump, and transferred by a pump (4) to a mixer/extruder (9). A catalyst is then added to accelerate hardening as the mixture is heated to a preferable temperature of 70 degrees C, extruded through an outlet (11) and cut to the required size by a cutter (12). The apparatus has its pipes coated with a low friction thermoplastic.
