The invention relates to a method for selecting pixel data or character data by means of video text, teletext or OSD signals, wherein digital data signals containing a character code signal (C) are outputted and a pixel data signal (P) is outputted from a character read-only memory (3) according to said character code signal (C). In order to use a large number of character sets, requiring only a relatively small amount of extra effort and providing a high degree of flexibility, a selection data signal (D3) is selected from a programmable display memory by means of said character code signal (C) and the pixel data signal (P) is selected from a character read-only memory (3) by means of said selection data signal. The invention also relates to a circuit arrangement for the above-mentioned method.
