Two foraminous filter members 20 and 22 one at least of which must be a piston fit allows the pressure drop across each to compact the bed and prevent channelling. A suitable spring 38 may be incorporated to bias member 20. Liquid enters the outer tube at 30 and leaves the rough apertures 32 in the inner tube.
