A nuclear reactor comprises an annular thermal core 1, an annular inner graphite reflector 2, and a fast reactor core 4 inside the inner reflector. A semi-permeable layer 3, for example of natural uranium, may be arranged between the core 4 and the reflector 2. The thermal core 1 may be surrounded by a graphite reflector (not shown) and may be moderated by water maintained at a temperature of 60-90‹ C., preferably 85‹ C., by circulation at a rate of about 20 times per hour. The reactor cores are preferably arranged so that where S4 and S1 are the fission rates (number of fissions per second per unit volume) of the fast and thermal cores respectively and W4 and W1 are the heat contents per unit volume up to the melting points of the fast and thermal cores respectively. The two cores are each subvertical on their own, and during a power excursion the inherent shut-off properties of the thermal core come into action before temperatures in the fast core get too high. The reactor is suitable for experiments with fast neutrons.
