A print preparation machine has a cylindrical rod (5.1) spreading and dosing a semi-liquid agent over the surface (O) width of a paper or carton web (2) as this runs around a moving (L) drum. The rod (5.1) is especially tubular metal or carbon fibre of the same width as the web (2) and esp. has an elastic mantle (5.2). The thickness of the mantle (5.2) is no more than 60 per cent of that of the core diameter, but at least 1 mm. The mantle is an organic polymer e.g. polyurethane, styrene, butadiene and polyolefin, or pure polyurethane. Alternatively the mantle (5.2) is rubber.
