The surgical instrument comprises a tool assembly (12) comprising an elongate jaw actuation device having a proximal end and a distal end. The jaw actuation device comprises: an outer sleeve (18), an inner rod (16) within the outer sleeve, one of the inner rod and the outer sleeve being longitudinally translatable relative to the other, and at least one rotatable jaw (70,72) coupled to the distal end of the jaw actuation device. A handle assembly (14) retains the tool assembly at its proximal end and translating one of the inner rod and the outer sleeve relative to the other. The tool assembly further comprises a guide member (110) coupled to the distal end of the jaw actuation device. One rotatable jaw comprises an arc defining portion (130,131) shaped to define an arc having a centre (150,152) which is displaced from the rotatable jaw, the at least one rotatable jaw engaging the guide member at the arc defining portion of the at least one rotatable jaw such that, as one of the inner rod and the outer sleeve is longitudinally translated relative to the other. The arc defines portion of the at least one rotatable jaw moves relative to the guide member and is guided by the guide member to rotate the at least one rotatable jaw approximately about the center of the arc. |
