[Also in Division F1] A bearing assembly comprises at least one bearing which is mounted within a casing and which is supported therefrom by at least one member at least part of which is divided by internal walls into a multiplicity of similarly shaped components. In an embodiment, a gas-turbine vertical lift engine 10, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), has an outer casing 11 in which there are disposed a two-stage low pressure compressor 12, a two-stage high pressure compressor 13, combustion equipment 14, a highpressure turbine 15 and a low-pressure turbine 16. The high-pressure compressor 13 and highpressure turbine 15 are mounted on a common shaft 20, which has therein a shaft 21 carrying the low-pressure compressor 12 and the lowpressure turbine 16. The shafts 20, 21 are mounted at each end in ball-bearings 22, 26, outer races 24, 30 of which are carried by a number of angularly spaced-apart struts 32. Each strut 32 has a radially outer portion 33 and a radially inner portion comprising walls 35, 36 having a number of hexagon section tubes 37 therebetween. The tubes 37 are parallel to the axis of the engine, form similarlyshaped compartments 38, Fig. 3 (not shown), are made of synthetic resin material, and may be bonded to the walls 35, 36 which also may be made of synthetic resin material. Some of the struts 32 contain tubes 41 through which cooling air or oil may be supplied to the bearings 22, 26. In a modification, the hexagonsection tubes 37 are replaced by cylindrical tubes 40, Fig. 4 (not shown). |
