A method and apparatus for removing coatings from the hull of a ship using a steered magnet vehicle supported by the adhesion force only of a permanent magnet means to a surface to be treated. Using an ultra-high pressure water jet system and method for removing coatings, paint, deposits, organic and inorganic from hulls without harming the substrate material and to provide a superior surface for the application of subsequent coatings.
