The fuel preheater comprises a heat exchanger (3), through which the fuel (5) of an internal combustion engine, especially an unrefined vegetable oil, is pumped. The heat exchanger is preheated by the engine oil before being injected into the cylinder head. The heat exchanger is made of a material which has a good heat-conducting property and is placed in the oil sump (2) of a piston engine (1). The heat exchanger does not hinder the circulation of the lubricating oil (4). The rail of a fuel injection unit is screwed into an electrically heated element. The fuel in the rail may be preheated by the electrically heated element.
