PURPOSE: A method for communicating at a set-top box having a cable modem within the same is provided to reduce a communication application, thereby providing faster executing speed. CONSTITUTION: A method for communicating at a set-top box having a cable modem within the same includes the steps of connecting the set-top box with a head-end at a physical layer and an MAC(Media Access Control) layer in an initial operation of the set-top box(201-202), maintaining the connection by receiving and transmitting messages at regular periods while an application is not executed(203), setting up an address of the set-top box by a DHCP process in executing the communication application within the set-top box(204), transmitting and receiving data at the address through a communication channel connected between the head-end and the set-top box(205), and terminating only the application without releasing the connection the head-end and the set-top box(206-207).
