Receiving broadcast material

The apparatus includes a device for receiving broadcast material and a detector for detecting whether a viewer has watched a programmer for a predetermined length of time(e.g. half of a program). If the user has watched a programme for at least the required time details of the program are stored in a user action log. This log is used over a period of time to develop a profile of viewer preferences and habits. This profile is used to produce a virtual channel having a schedule of programmes matching user preferences and also an adaptive programme guide that shows all the available programmes matching a user profile. If the viewer is not present the apparatus will record the programme from the adaptive guide that has the highest match with the user profile or if the user is distracted or interrupted the apparatus will record the program for playback from the point of interruption.
