PURPOSE: A method and a device for compressing a multi-channel motion picture are provided to compress pictures of multiple channels by a maximum compression rate by using a single MPEG CHIP. CONSTITUTION: A device for compressing a multi-channel motion picture includes a video switch part(100) for selectively converting motion picture frames of a plurality of channels according to a control signal, a video decoder(120) for converting motion picture frames output by multiplexing motion pictures of the plurality of channels by the video switch part to digital video signals, a control logic part(110) for controlling the input sequence of the motion pictures and selecting a frame to control a predetermined number of frames to be input per second always, a video memory(130) for storing the motion picture frames of the plurality of channels, a motion picture compression processing part(140) for receiving the motion picture frames of the selected number per second from the video memory under the control of the control logic part, and comparing video channel information per the respective input motion picture frame with a currently input motion picture frame with reference to a reference frame per channel for compressing the motion picture video data per channel, a first memory area(150) for storing the reference frames per video channel, and a second memory area(160) for storing parameters of the respective motion picture frames for data compression.
