Shaft furnace (10) comprises a reducing zone (16) and a reforming zone (26) divided by a refractory wall (19). The zones are connected to each other by a nozzle (17) in the wall and the furnace further comprises a pre-heating and pre-reducing zone (14) and a top gas outlet (24). The reducing zone connected to the pre-heating and pre-reducing zone follows a transition zone (18) connected to the reducing zone and contains a removal zone (20) and a catalyst for gas reforming reactions in the gas reforming zone. An Independent claim is also included for a process for directly reducing metal oxides, especially iron oxides. Preferred Features: The gas reforming zone has a catalyst surface of 70m2 catalyst/m3 methane.
