A method is provided for selecting nucleic acids encoding gene products in which the nucleic acid encoding the gene product is selectively and quantitatively amplified depending on the activity of the gene itself or the gene product. The method may, for example, be used in selecting gene product s arising from in vitro evolution of molecular libraries.
