Preferred embodiments include associating surface material samples with a business entity within one or more computer databases wherein at least one o f the surface material samples are labeled with information specified by the business entity. Data requests are received for at least one of the surface material samples and include an identifier of the business entity. A respons e to the data request includes at least one of the surface material samples an d associated label information. The response to the data request may be layere d based upon supply chain layer.
