A method for producing a glass particle deposited body deposited around a starting rod by OVD and including few foreign matters, so as to manufacture an optical fiber hardly broken and excellent in optical transmission characteristics. According to the invention, by OVD, (1) before or after starting depositing glass particles, the glass particles adhering to a reaction enclosure are removed, the reaction enclosure is closed and evacuated, (2) the rate of flow of purging gas made to flow through a gas line of each burner is set to 1 m/min or above while the apparatus is not in use, and (3) clean air (CA) is introduced into the reaction enclosure and the pressure in the reaction enclosure is set to a positive pressure while the apparatus is not in use. Alternatively, steps 1 and 2 are executed, or steps 1, 2, and 3 are executed.
