PURPOSE: A method for encoding an output of a direct coding time-to-digital converter(TDC) in parallel is provided which can obtain the same value as the original output and also can reduce the number of TDC output encoding logic gates. CONSTITUTION: The method encodes the output of a direct coding time-to-digital converter(TDC) of a digital oscilloscope in parallel. In more detail, the output of the direct coding time-to-digital converter is divided and then encoded, and each encoded output becomes an independent output of the TDC and then is sent to a host computer. Using the fact that the output of the direct-coding TDC is 1-out-of-N code, its output is divided by M and then encoded respectively. These encoded values are added in a central processing unit to have the original output of the TDC. Thus, the number of circuit gates can be reduced.
