[Also in Division G2] A communications apparatus includes sighting means (e.g. binoculars) having an optical system with associated selective radiation diverting means which extracts from or injects into the visible light beam received or transmitted by the optical system, non-visible intelligence, by providing a secondary focus at which intelligence receiving means or transmitting means may be located. A communications link may thus be provided between two operators viewing each other over a large distance through binoculars provided with transmitter and receiver means. In a prismatic binocular system, Fig. 1, the selective radiation diverting means is a dichroic coating 5 on the surface of the first prism which reflects any infrared radiation entering the system to a focus at 6, where an infrared detect- or may be located. Visible light passes through the system and can be viewed. An optical system including a receiver such as this, could form one side of the pair of binoculars, while the other side could be an optical system with a gallium arsenide lamp at position 6 to act as a transmitter of infrared light. In an alternative arrangement to enable the secondary focus to be provided outside the visible light path an inclined dichroic mirror (8), Fig. 2 (not shown) and, perhaps, further mirrors, are used. The invention is applicable to Galilean binoculars also, Fig. 3 (not shown). The gallium arsenide lamp may be modulated with a speech signal from a microphone and detected signals applied to headphones.
