PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which is used in a magnetic recording apparatus, such as audio equipment, video equipment and various kinds of information equipment, the recording and reproducing of which can be performed in two or more directions and which is superior in mass- productivity and has high reliability, and to provide a recording and reproducing method of the magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: This tape-like magnetic recording medium has a nonmagnetic support and a magnetic layer which is formed on one surface of the nonmagnetic support and consists of a ferromagnetic metal thin film. By setting metal particles having 5-20 nm particle size are used for forming the magnetic layer and the product of residual magnetic flux density Br of this recording medium and thicknessδof the magnetic layer is regulated to be 2×10<-3> to 30×10<-3> T.μm, the recording and reproducing of this recording medium can be performed in two or more directions. Recording is performed by a linear system, by making this recording medium travel in the two directions of the longitudinal direction.
