PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for selectively producing methyl methacrylate from methyl 2-hydroxyisolactate. SOLUTION: Methyl 2-hydroxyisolactate and methanol are together brought into contact with a crystalline aluminosilicate and then the resultant reaction product is brought into contact with a solid catalyst consisting essentially of phosphoric acid and silica and preferably further containing an alkali metal element, an alkali earth metal element and/or a lanthanide element to produce methyl methacrylate.
