PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To convert heavy alkyl aromatic compounds into benzene, toluene, xylene(s), or the like, by disproportionation reaction without affecting catalytic activity and catalyst life. SOLUTION: The objective method comprises converting heavy alkyl aromatic compounds, especially 8-12C ones, into benzene, toluene and xylene(s) as aromatic compounds of higher values using a toluene disproportionation reactor including a nickel-, palladium- or platinum-modified mordenite catalyst. The method enables the heavy alkyl aromatic compounds to be treated in large quantities without affecting catalytic activity and catalyst life. The purpose can be attained by charging the reactor with the heavy alkyl aromatic compounds under given strict reaction conditions and maintaining these conditions during the conversion.
