Fibre-forming polyamides are stabilized by addition of inorganic oxy-compounds of tungsten or an inorganic oxy-acid of molybdenum. Polyamides specified include hexamethylene adipamide. The metal compound may be added during polymerization in an amount such that 0.001-1.0% of metal is present. Tungsten compounds specified include tungstic acid, polytungstic acids, tungstates, polytungstates, tungsten trioxide, heteropolytungstic acids, phosphotungstic acid, phosphotungstates, and dodecatungstophosphoric acid. Molybdenum compounds specified include molybdic acid, polymolybdic acids, molybdates, e.g. sodium molybdate, polymolybdates, heteropolymolybdic acid and its salts. Other photo- and thermal stabilizers may be used in conjunction with these, e.g. 3-9 p.p.m. of a copper compound, e.g. cupric acetate, 100-900 p.p.m. of a halide or 5-100 p.p.m. of a manganese compound. The copper compound may be used in conjunction with an alkali metal or ammonium halide or a hydrogen halide of an organic base. The manganese compound may be added during or after polymerization in an amount such that the manganese and tungsten or molybdenum are present in their atomic ratios. Manganese compounds specified include manganese tungstate, phosphotungstate, molybdate, phosphomolybdate, acetate, oxalate, adipate, lactate, orthophosphate or pyrophosphate. The polyamide may also contain a pigment, e.g. 0.02-3.0% TiO2. In examples the polymerization is effected in the presence of water, acetic acid and hexamethylene diammonium iodide and in the absence of air. The product is made into a fabric. |
