PURPOSE: A slot cycle assignment within a communication system is provided to reduce a time necessary for making a dispatch call quickly. CONSTITUTION: MUs(Mobile Units)(303,305,307) operating in a dispatch mode receive the first slot cycle. MUs(302,304,306,308) not operating in the dispatch mode receive the second slot cycle. The second slot cycle is greater than the first slot cycle, so that the MUs(303,305,307) operate in the dispatch mode "wake up" during a slot cycle normally utilized for interconnect calls. Because shorter slot cycles are utilized for the MUs(303,305,307) operating in the dispatch mode, a time required for making a dispatch call is greatly reduced.
