PURPOSE: A process controller for coating a fastener is provided, which process controller is used to monitor and control the process for applying a polymer resin coating onto a fastener which moves along a pathway located on or adjacent a coating work station, within the predetermined criteria, for enabling a fastener to be coated automatically. CONSTITUTION: The process controller(10) automatically carries out the steps of confirming the availability of at least one subsystem which supplies at least one of the preconditions comprising the compressed air, the process heat used to coat the fastener, the vacuum pressure for a powder coating reclamation system and the presence of a sufficient coating material; initiating the control signal to actuate at least one of the subsystem; continuously monitoring whether at least one of the run conditions is a negative run condition which causes the processing of a fastener not to meet the predetermined criteria, wherein the run conditions comprise the fastener speed along a pathway within a predetermined range, the coating flow and the heating within a predetermined temperature range, during processing the fastener; continuously monitoring whether at least one of the preselected fastener conditions is a defective fastener condition by using a machine vision system communicating with the process controller, wherein the preselected fastener conditions comprise the number of threads on the fastener, the location of threads on the fastener, the orientation of pitch of the threads on the fastener, the amount of coating coverage on the fastener and the location of coating on the fastener, during processing the fastener; automatically stopping the processing and indicating the cause of the negative run condition when a negative run condition is detected; and continuing the processing while causing the detected fastener to be directed to the preselected location for a defective fastener when a defective fastener condition is detected.
