A method of protecting human and animal skin and hair from the damaging effect of UV radiation which comprises applying to said human or animal skin or hair a UV absorber of formula wherein: R1 and R2 are each independently of the other hydrogen; branched C5 -C18 alkyl; C2 -C18 alkenyl; a radical of formula --CH2 --CH(--OH)--CH2 --O--T1 ; a radical of formula (1a) or a radical of formula (1b) R3 and R4 are each independently of the other hydrogen or C1 -C5 alkyl; R5 is hydroxy; C1 -C5 alkoxy which is unsubstituted or substituted by one or several OH groups; amino; mono- or di-C1 -C5 alkylamino; M; a radical of formula R6 is a direct bond; a straight-chain or branched C1 -C4 alkylene radical or a radical of formula R7, R8 and R9 are each independently of one another C1 -C18 alkyl; C1 -C18 alkoxy or a radical of formula R10, R11 and R12 are each independently of one another C1 -C14 alkyl which is unsubstituted or substituted by one or several OH groups; Rb 13 is hydrogen; M; C1 -C5 alkyl; or a radical of formula --(CH2)m.2 --O--T1 ; R14 is C1 -C5 alkyl; M is a metal cation; T1 is hydrogen; or C1 -C8 alkyl; m1 is 1 to 3; m2 is 2 to 14; and p1 is 0; or a number from 1 to 5.
