Has a selection operation (402,408,414,420,422, 424,428) during which for at least a gear setting, a range of limit values is selected between at least two potential limit values (3). Method for recognizing the engaged relationship of an automobile gearbox (3), using a signal corresponding to the gearbox input rotational speed and a signal corresponding to its output rotational speed. Includes an operation for determination of the engaged relationship (404) during which is determined the selected gear, as a function of the relative position of the signal ratios and of limit values from a limit range. Each limit range corresponds to a gear. During the selection operation of the limit value (422) a butterfly valve air input shutter is positioned or engine load determined, and when: (a) the valve is closed or engine is not on full or partially loaded, a check is made of the absolute value of the derivative with respect to time of the gearbox input rotational speed to determine if a predetermined level has not been exceeded during the selection period, and; during the selection period, the same derivative is checked to determine if its sign has been conserved, that is the rotational speed remains either increasing or decreasing; the closest limit value to a set gear relationship is selected only when non of these conditions is fulfilled.
