PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize the consistency between how a hard copy looks and how an image looks on an image display device even in the case of using a conventional (existing) image output device in which the relation between an input pixel value and density is regulated. SOLUTION: A prescribed output gradation characteristic of the image output device for outputting a medical image as a hard copy and a prescribed observation environment condition on which the hard copy is observed are defined. An image processing part 13 performs gradation conversion of the medical image into gradation in which a hard copy outputted under the prescribed output gradation character and perceptual sensitivity on the prescribed observation environment condition are linear or into gradation in which luminance in the case the hard copy outputted under the prescribed output gradation characteristic is observed on the prescribed observation environment condition and luminance of the display device are linear, and the medical image subjected to gradation conversion is displayed on the image display device 14.
